EAC ATEX / EAC Explosion Protection (TR CU 012/2011)

The term “EAC ATEX” is commonly used as an informal expression for EAC certification of explosion-protected equipment within the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). However, the actual legal basis is Technical Regulation TR CU 012/2011 “On Safety of Equipment Intended for Use in Explosive Atmospheres”.

This regulation defines mandatory safety requirements for equipment and protective systems used in hazardous explosive environments.

TR CU 012/2011 applies particularly to:

  • explosion-protected electrical equipment,
  • sensors,
  • control systems,
  • industrial installations,
  • machinery used in hazardous areas,
  • protective systems,
  • as well as other equipment intended for explosive atmospheres.

It is important to distinguish between European ATEX requirements and EAC Ex certification:

  • The ATEX Directive applies within the European Union.
  • TR CU 012/2011 applies within the EAEU.
  • There is no mutual recognition between both systems.

Existing ATEX certification therefore does not replace EAC certification for exports into the EAEU.

For EAC Ex certification, products must additionally comply with the regulatory requirements of the Eurasian Economic Union.

The conformity assessment procedure typically includes:

Depending on the product category, additional requirements may include:

  • production surveillance,
  • inspection controls,
  • Material Certificates,
  • Safety Justifications,
  • as well as testing by accredited Ex laboratories.

Ex marking within the EAEU must comply with TR CU 012/2011 requirements and must be correctly applied to the product, nameplate and Technical Documentation.

Typical mistakes related to EAC Ex certification include:

Errors in explosion protection certification frequently result in:

  • rejection of certification,
  • additional laboratory testing,
  • major project delays,
  • customs clearance problems,
  • or rejection of goods at the border.

Explosion protection is considered one of the most complex areas of EAC conformity assessment because technical safety requirements, regulatory obligations and documentation requirements are closely interconnected.
